About MeWemyss Ware was first produced in 1882 by the Fife Pottery in Kirkcaldy, operated by Robert Heron & Sons. The name of the pottery most likely refers to the Wemyss family of nearby Wemyss Castle, which gave the product an immediate connection with the top end of the ceramic market. However, it ceased to amaze and delight discerning people while trying to please a wider buying public by producing more standardised pieces aiming at the greatest number of potential buyers.
