About MeWemyss Ware was first produced in 1882 by the Fife Pottery in Kirkcaldy, operated by Robert Heron & Sons. The name of the pottery most likely refers to the Wemyss family of nearby Wemyss Castle, which gave the product an immediate connection with the top end of the ceramic market. This basin was probably used as part of a set with the ewer (ABDMS015206).
