About MeStoneware press-moulded pie dish with rounded rim and two applied ribbed loop handles.
It is glazed all over with a green-yellow wood ash glaze then decorated in a swirling wave pattern by 'finger wiping' through reddish-brown tenmoku slip and a final firing of mottled wood ash glaze.
Edward Hughes had a great love of English slipware and most of his decorative techniques are slipware in origin. Here he has run his finger through the wet glaze to create the swirling wave-like pattern. Hughes was also inspired by Michael Cardew and his influence is seen in similarity of the pattern on this plate to the decoration on some of Cardew's pieces in the Collections, such as ABDMS095708.19.
