About MeNorthcote was pupil, assistant and biographer to Sir Joshua Reynolds and he attended the Royal Academy Schools in London. In 1777 he left for Italy to study Renaissance and classical art, returning to London in 1780, where he worked as a portraitist for the rest of his life. Allan Maconochie, Lord Meadowbank (1748-1816), was a Scottish judge. The robust, painterly execution and response to the sitter's individuality in this portrait shows a clear debt to Reynolds.
