About MeThis enigmatic print was the first work of McBey's to refer to the war. It was published with the title "Disquietude, 1914" and is a sketch of Mrs Martin Hardie done in the summer months of 1914 when the presage of war filled the air. The sitter was the wife of the painter and etcher Martin Hardie (1875-1952), who was Keeper of Prints and Drawings at the Victoria and Albert Museum. In 1925 he catalogued James McBey's etchings and in his description of this work Hardie wrote, "The shadow of war lies across this plate".
More About Me
Disquietude refers to a sense of uneasiness, or anxiety. This piece was sketched just prior to the onset of WW1 - do you understand the title now?
