About MeAugustus John studied at the Slade School of Art in the 1890s. By the time he was twenty five, he had become the most famous British artist of his day. John adopted a rather bohemian, gypsy lifestyle and some time in 1910, fell in love with the town of Martigues, in Provence, located half-way between Arles and Marseilles, and first seen by the artist from a train en route to Italy. The landscape of Provence became his inspiration for a time and the handling and palette of his work reflected the influence of Post Impressionism.
More About Me
A superb post-impressionist painting by one of the UK’s greatest artists. John was foremost a portrait painter in the 1920s; this landscape is one of his later works.
