About MeArguably it is Peploe's paintings of southern France that most fully express his instinct for colour. He visited Cassis, a small lively fishing port on the Côte d'Azur, on four occasions.

In response to the bright sunshine and brilliant light, Peploe has emphasised the contrast between deep shade and dusty heat. He does this chiefly through the use of foreground colour - the daringly angled tree trunks are described in rich blue, chocolate and purple shadows that effectively offset the warm tones of the sun-baked villa.

More About Me
This painting is full of the colours of the French countryside. The tree branches cast shadows but there is bright blue sky beyond.
