Historic Title
  • A Marsh in Les Landes
About MeTheodore Rousseau was the son of a tailor. He first began to study the landscape of France in 1833. Inspired by Dutch seventeenth century landscape painting and the art of John Constable, his landscape pictures are quiet, low-toned and unassertive. Rousseau's fascination for nature led him to travel further afield and to paint in other parts of France which had not been admired or sought out by artists. Les Landes is an area of flat, marshy country bordering the Bay of Biscay in the south west of France.

An air of stillness and quiet pervades the whole composition. The tone is low and sombre but the bright red of the central figure's skirt, which is reflected in the still waters below the bridge, provides necessary vitality and a focal point for the composition.
