About MeMaurice de Vlaminck was a self-taught artist of Flemish ancestry, who painted between periods as a professional cyclist and violinist. Together with Matisse and Derain he became known as a 'Fauve' or 'wild beast' owing to the explosion of colour and distorted images in his work.

In 'Street Scene', painted late in the artist's career, the last vestige of Vlaminck's fauvist period is evident in the intense colouring of the sky and the touch of vermilion on one of the roofs. Otherwise his colours are more sombre. Throughout his career, Vlaminck continued to paint landscapes and townscapes of Northern France.
