By the time of Wilson's death in 1893 the company was in terminal decline. The business had already been transferred to Wilson's four sons who in 1893 established the company on a limited liability basis. In 1894 the Inland Revenue made a claim against the Wilson family for unpaid taxes which led to a disappointing and unsuccessful trial. The sale of Wilson's collection indicates the severity of the family's debt.

The Catalogue itself is useful in demonstrating the art work that Wilson kept in his house. With only a few of the items being his own work this catalogue can help with character development, possible inspiration and perhaps an indication of familiarity between Wilson and contemporary artists.
