About MeFollowing a nervous illness in his fortieth year, David Wilkie made a belated Grand Tour to Europe, spending two winters in Italy and ending his sojourn with a seven month stay in Spain.

This watercolour of travellers entering Madrid was painted in December 1827, soon after Wilkie arrived in Spain. He was attracted by the colourful character of the country and its people and wrote to Sir Robert Peel, “My journey here has been a high gratification to me; the people, from their unsettled and marauding state, present appearances of the most original kind".
