About MeThe sitter was the artist's sister-in-law. Souter painted this work as a wedding present. Mrs C H Souter wears a long flowing gown in palest pink and carries an ostrich fan. This style of dress was deeply indebted to the influence of Japanese art, which had come in to Europe through Paris some thirty years before. The long, thin format of the painting - along with the pose of the figure and subdued colour contrasts - owe much to the paintings of the American artist James McNeill Whistler, who was also deeply influnced by Japanese art and whose paintings - titled sonatas, fugues and symphonies - were a great inspiration to British artists at the beginning of this century.

More About Me

What do you think the artist is saying here about his subject? This painting was a wedding gift to the sitter. How would you feel about receiving something like this as a present?
