About MeHeron's Kirkcaldy pottery marketed its goods as 'Wemyss Ware' in honour of Lady Grosvenor of Wemyss Castle. Earthenware pieces were painted with bright flowers and fruit in a vigorous style. The potter also made models of pigs and cats.
Wemyss pigs were made with the nursery or the bedroom in mind. The big ones were sometimes used as doorstops, which accounts for the high incidence of broken tails and chipped ears. The little ones were occasionally made with a slot in their backs for use as piggy banks. Sometimes a child's name and birth-date were inscribed alongside a personalised pig. The earliest Wemyss pigs have deeply etched lines around the face and chin giving them a delightfully worried face.
