About MeJean Vinay was born in 1907 in Saint-Marcellin in the Dauphiné region of France. After secondary school he developed a passion for art and in 1933 moved to Montmartre in Paris, where he began to work as a painter. He was mainly self-taught, learning from artworks he studied in the museums and galleries of Paris. After the German occupation of France, Vinay moved to Algiers where he met the famous French artist Albert Marquet, who allowed him to work in his studio

Upon his return to Paris in 1946, he quickly found wide success. Concentrating on views of the French capital he soon became known as "the painter of Paris".

In 1978 Vinay died and was buried in the town of Albenc. His wife subsequently donated a large number of his paintings to the local region and as a result, the Jean Vinay Museum opened its doors in 1979 at Saint-Antoine-l'Abbaye in Isère.
