About MeThis box is typical of East Asian lacquerware. It has been covered with several layers of red lacquer with each layer being dried before another is applied. Once this process is complete and the lacquer sufficiently hardened it is then carved. This particular box is a Japanese copy of a style that was first made popular in China. The Chinese version would have more layers of lacquer and therefore deeper carving and would have featured this type of scroll pattern known as Guri.Meiji period (1868-1912)
