About MeThis bottle was designed around 1900 to collect water samples from below the sea. The temperature, salinity and chemical content of these samples were recorded. This model had an integral thermometer, improving accuracy. Temperature readings could then be taken without opening the bottle.

Such bottles were also insulated so that external water did not affect the temperature of the sample. This type had five concentric cylinders of celluloid, brass and ebonite. The bottle was sent down open. When the required depth was reached, a weight was sent down the sounding line. This struck the bottle's lid and it fell into place, sealing the bottle.
