About MeTheo Tobiasse was born in Israel in 1927, but his Lithuanian parents later settled in Paris where his father, a typographer, hoped to find work. Like Anne Frank, he spent his adolescence shut up with his parents in their tiny apartment where, on more than one occasion, they were very nearly discovered. It was a productive time for Tobiasse, who had a brief spell at an art school in Paris at the beginning of the German Occupation, before the laws of discrimination forced him into hiding. During this forced isolation he amassed a large file of drawings.
When the War ended he worked as a commercial artist, creating designs for advertising, first in Paris, then in Nice, where he moved in 1950.

As soon as he could, and often at night, he painted. In 1960, his work was noticed at an exhibition of young artists in Nice and he won first prize. From then on Tobiasse was finally able to devote himself entirely to painting. It was during this period that this joyful and exuberant painting was created.
