About MeLady Geddes was Rachel White, John Forbes White's older sister. She married the classical scholar William Duguid Geddes (1828-1900). Geddes was a close friend of White both having been students of J.S. Blackie at Marichal College, Aberdeen. In 1853 he became rector of Aberdeen Grammar School, and in 1855 was appointed Professor of Greek at University and King's Colleges, Aberdeen, a post he later held in the United University from 1860 to 1885. In 1885 he became Principal and Vice Chancellor of the University. Lady Geddes was a formidable principal's wife and her soirées at Chanonry Lodge in Old Aberdeen were grand affairs.
Like her brother she was a very early patron of George Reid, commissioning a portrait of her only child, Blanche, from him in ?????. Blanche in turn was to marry the next holder of the Chair of Greek, John Harrower.
