About MeGeorge Pinwell was educated at St Martin's Lane Academy and belonged to a small group of artists whose style evolved to suit the detailed wood engravings made for book illustrations.

Although this scene appears to belong to the 19th century tradition of peasant subjects, the medieval costume gives away the fact that it was intended as an illustration. The subject was inspired by an old Scottish ballad 'The Hireman Chiel'. The intensity of emotion conveyed by the faces and detail of the clothes are reminiscent of the work of the Pre-Raphaelite artists.
