About MePiper Alpha was a watershed in the history of the offshore hydrocarbon production. The disater and the killing of 167 workers highlighted the lipservice that many of the offshore operators paid to safety of the workforce. It provoked an outburst of anger amongst the workforce who loudly called for major changes in how the industry operated. Onshore public opinion also called for major reform of the industry.

The resulting enquiry into the disaster made plain the priority of production over all other concerns. It also led to a root and branch reform of regulation and operation of the industry and the introduction of an independent body The Health & Safety Executive (Offshore Division) to regulate the work.
