About MeCharles Oppenheimer was primarily a landscape artist. He was born in Manchester and studied at Manchester School of Art, but spent much of his life living in Kirkcudbright. An artistic community, initially formed by painters from the Glasgow School, flourished in this fishing town from the late nineteenth to the early twentieth century.
'Landscape, Kirkcudbright' recalls the works of the Impressionists in the way that it captures a fleeting view of the River Dee. The branches of the trees cast blue shadows as they sway in the autumnal breeze. The orange leaves are reflected in the water. Oppenheimer retains a sense of movement in the river, as it winds through the painting towards the foreground.
