About MeAs well as working as a sculptor, James Pittendrigh MacGillivray was also a poet, painter, printmaker and photographer. Born in Port Elphinstone, which is now part of Inverurie, he was a fervent Nationalist and had a notoriously difficult personality. This led to his work almost being forgotten after his death.Between 1897 and 1910, MacGillivray frequently took titles or subjects for his work from Greek mythology. Ianthe was a mythological sea nymph. The sitter here is Miss Florence Findlay, daughter of John R. Findlay of Aberdour. MacGillivray gives this bust a more delicate, smooth finish than other busts he was producing at this time.
