About MeThis is a plaster cast of one of the most famous sculptures of ancient Greece, the Aphrodite of Milos, better known as the Venus de Milo. Re-discovered in Milos, Greece, in 1820, the original sculpture carved in parian marble is now located in the Louvre, Paris. From an inscription on its plinth, it is thought to be the work of Alexandros of Antioch although it was previously mistakenly attributed to the sculptor Praxiteles.

In 1902 John Forbes White had suggested that a gallery of casts should be acquired for the city. The 1905 building was designed to accommodate this collection and over two hundred pieces were donated by individuals. The Venus was presented by A. Marshall Mackenzie, the architect of the building.
