About MeAs art master at Bellshill Academy outside Glasgow, Cowie found the subject matter for his own paintings in the classroom where he taught. In this picture, the autumn leaves seen through the schoolroom window stand as a metaphor for passing youth.

Cowie believed that it was not enough for art to create an impression of reality. He believed that a painting should convey an idea or express a concept. This intellectual approach and also the emphasis on drawing in his work set him apart from many of his contemporaries.

More About Me
James Cowie did several studies to reach his final composition for this painting, meaning he put things in place purposefully. Look at the elements in this painting - what story do you think they tell?
