About MeInspired by a group of 'painting by numbers' pictures that he collected from charity shops David McCracken reworks archetypal images in a post-modern way. He was attracted by the 60s and 70s feel of the painting kits - the taste for bland Americana - and tried to recreate it in his own work. As a printmaker, McCracken was also drawn to the methodical method of the kits and used his printmaking expertise to process his images in a way that both mirrors and challenges these origins. In spite of such mundane beginnings, the resulting picture captures in a bold and striking way the subliminal and romantic elements of landscape that make it of abiding fascination for so many artists.
