About MeWhen Bellany painted this picture in the 1960's he was a rather isolated figure amongst a generation of modernists. These were artists such as Eduardo Paolozzi who embraced all things International and who reflected the current vogue for Pop art.Conversely, Bellany adopted a freer, more expressive painting technique which owed much to a northern tradition. His contorted subjects are often treated in a symbolic way, combining elements from the sea. This rather brutal portrait shares some of the angst that can be seen in Bacon's portrayal of a pope. Antoinette was a model at the Royal College of Art, London, where Bellany trained from 1965 to 1968.
More About Me
Bellany used his free and expressive technique in this rather brutal portrait of a model at the Royal College of Art, where he studied between 1965-68.
