About MeGakutei was a pupil of Totoya Hokkei (1780 - 1850) and a member of Katsushika school, founded by Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849). Gakutei was most celebrated for his 'Surimono' prints. 'Surimono' literally means 'printed thing', but the term was particularly used for luxurious prints that were privately published by group of poets for special occasions such as New Year's celebrations, actor's announcement parties, and other fairs. Surimono used the most costly materials for paper and pigments, and meticulous techniques for carving and printing.

This charming Surimono by Gakutei is printed on a thick paper and has several layers of pigments. Gold pigment applied on the area of the courtesan adds a gorgeous atmosphere to the print. The inscription on the right is a poem suggesting that this print was used as a seasonal greeting card.
