The cruisers Norfolk and Suffolk were the first to be engaged in the pursuit, and the German ships were engaged by the battle cruiser Hood and the battleship Prince of Wales, in an action fought in the early morning of 24th May. The Hood, the oldest ship present, was sunk by a plunging salvo and the Prince of Wales was damaged, but these ships had in their turn damaged the Bisrnarck and slowed her down. There was a period of acute anxiety when, after the Prinz Eugen had parted company with her consort, the battleship was temporarily lost by the shadowing force, but touch was regained on 26th May.
Retribution followed. After being badly damaged in her steering compartment by aircraft of the Fleet Air Arm, the Bismarck was shadowed throughout the night by destroyers. She was brought to action on 27th May by the King George V, the flagship of Admiral Tovey, commanding the British Home Fleet, and by the Rodney. The coup de grace was given by torpedoes from the cruiser Dorsetshire.
