About MeThe Aberdeen artist Robert Brough studied at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh, where he met fellow Scottish artist Samuel J. Peploe: just one of the artists he travelled with to explore different movements and different styles of painting and drawing. In Paris the artists employed the methods of the Impressionists, such as Monet and Degas and in Brittany Brough took inspiration from the Nabis and the Synthesistes and in London Brough became a society portraitist under the tutelage of his close friend John Singer Sargent. Brough, who painted mostly portraits for the wealthier members of society, died tragically in 1905 in a train crash, aged just 33.Being the illegitimate son of a working maid, Robert was brought up by the family of his uncles and became a "much loved older brother." Although his cousin, Jemima Brough, or Mima, was seventeen years his junior the two got on very well and Robert often painted her.
