About MeThe Aberdeen artist Robert Brough attended the Royal Scottish Academy, where he developed his unique, almost Post Impressionist style; taking inspiration form the French Impressionists and the Glasgow Boys. He also spent time painting in Paris, Morocco and Brittany. His technical brushwork, which contributed to his ability to capture the moment in his works, saw him grow very successful before his tragic death in a train crash in 1905.

This painting is a preliminary study for the final portrait of Kathleen Crombie. This finished portrait was presented to the Aberdeen Art Gallery by Mrs Theodore Crombie, Kathleen's mother, in 1923.
