About MeCharles Rennie Mackintosh and his wife Margaret Macdonald had moved to Walberswick on the Suffolk coast in 1914, when they believed their situation in Glasgow had become intolerable. Unable to obtain sufficient architectural or interior design commissions, the two abandoned the city in favour of this retreat where Mackintosh devoted his time to painting exquisite watercolours of shrubs, herbaceous plants and wild flowers. 'Berberis' was one of some forty plant studies painted at Walberswick between 1914 and 1915. Although Mackintosh has often been admired for his botanical accuracy, the plant depicted here has been identified as mahonia and is not in fact a berberis.
