About MeThis sculptural vessel is made from a sheet of copper to which a formal decorative pattern has been added by hammering and punching. It is also plated with tin on the exterior, creating a dulled surface, intended to make the viewer question what the vase is made from. Kaneko is one of a group of exciting young Japanese metalworkers who are pushing the boundaries of what can be achieved with metal.Kaneko demonstrates respect for his heritage by imbuing Japanese tradition and culture in his work whilst at the same time pushing the boundaries of experimentation with different materials. This piece expresses his skills as a silversmith with the manipulation of a different material, resulting in a stunning sculptural piece. Employing traditional methods, he plays out his fascination with perception and reality creating a series of questions for the viewer. Furthermore, the piece also evokes Japanese culture in the geometric treatment of the hammered dots and lines reminiscent of Samurai armour.
