About MeThe sitter was a close relation of James Justinian Morier (1780-1849) a British diplomat and author, noted for his novels about the Persian Qajar dynasty, most famously for the 'Hajji Baba' series. During the Napoleonic Wars he and his two brothers, Jack and David, forsook the world of trade to become involved in countering French activities and influence in the Ottoman Empire and Persia. This portrait was painted in Naples and in it James Morier indicates his interest in the Orient with his elaborate headgear - a fur-trimmed crimson turban.
