About MeAndrew Geddes was initially obliged to adopt his father's profession of excise officer, whilst simultaneously studying painting in the studio of Alexander Nasmyth. He entered the Royal Academy Schools in London in 1807, where he was a contemporary of Sir David Wilkie. Geddes was versatile as a painter, print-maker and collector. Although based in London, he wintered in Edinburgh to cultivate a network of Edinburgh patrons for his portraiture. He painted both Wardrop Senior and his son, the surgeon of the same name (Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh).
The sitter James Wardrop FRCSEd FRCS (1782 – 1869) was a Scottish surgeon. He was born in Torbane Hill, Linlithgowshire (now in West Lothian). He lived at various times in Edinburgh, London, St Andrews, Paris and Vienna. He became an Ophthalmic surgeon and was appointed surgeon-extraordinary by the Prince Regent, the future George IV.
Wardrop was an early contributer to and assisted in the founding of 'The Lancet' in 1823. He also had his portrait painted by Sir Henry Raeburn (National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne (Felton Bequest, 1925) and anotehr version sold Phillips 26th August 2000 (lot 1020).
