This set of small plain beakers was made around 1694 for the church of Auchreddy, now known as New Deer. The beakers were used during communion services at the church. After the Reformation, the Scottish Parliament passed an act instructing all churches to provide cups and a communion table. As the whole congregation now took part in sharing the wine the Pre-Reformation cups were too small. Many churches held special collections to raise the money to buy cups. David Sibbald, the minister of this parish from 1652 to 1707 collected subscriptions for the purchase of four cups.
