About MeAt 4617 tons gross and 378 feet long, Salamis was the biggest steel steamship launched from Hall Russell in the late 19th century. Launched in April 1899 and fitted with a clipper stem, this passenger and cargo carrier was an addition to the small steamship fleet of George Thompson Junior & Co's Aberdeen Line. Salamis sailed between Britain, South Africa and Australia. It was fitted with refrigerating machinery and a sizeable cold chamber, to carry Australia's increasing exports of meat and dairy produce.
