Sir Ian Clark Wood
Aberdeen, Scotland, born 1942
Born 21 July 1942
International businessman and philanthropist
Ian Wood grew up in Aberdeen where he worked in the North Sea oil industry. His entrepreneurial skills transformed his family’s business from a modest enterprise into a global operation, employing over 40,000 people. Ian has used his substantial personal wealth to establish The Wood Foundation which carries out philanthropic work in Africa and Scotland.
Ian’s passion for ‘venture philanthropy’ has brought positive social change and economic benefit to people living in sub-Saharan Africa. In Rwanda and Tanzania, the Foundation has purchased two tea factories empowering local people and improving the livelihoods of around 50,000 smallholders. The Foundation champions a fair and sustainable economy in both field and factory, and lobbies to protect the price paid to the growers. The Wood Foundation also works in Scotland investing in the educational and economic development of young people.
