Born near Monquhitter, Aberdeenshire, Cowie attended Aberdeen University before pursuing a career as an artist in Glasgow, Aberdeen and Arbroath. He was appointed Head of Painting at Gray's School of Art in 1935 and was elected an Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1936 and Academician in 1943.
