DescriptionWILLIAM ROBERTSON SMITH 1870 - 1881 SEMITIC SCHOLAR TAUGHT HEREHistoryTheologian and Semitic Scholar. Born in Keig Aberdeenshire, he studied at Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Bonn. He became Professor of Hebrew and Old Testament at the Free Church College Aberdeen, 1870-1881 and was appointed Professor of Arabic at Cambridge in 1883. He is also remembered as Editor-in-Chief of the Encyclopaedia Britannica 1881-1888.
