About MeHarry More Gordon studied and taught at Edinburgh College of Art. He has also spent time as a magazine editor, freelance artist, illustrator and textile designer.

This painting relies for its visual effect on this contrast between the intricate patterns of carpet and curtains in the interior of the artist's home and the broad, deep landscape, with its view of the Pentland Hills, visible through the open door.

Painted in 1980, this work is clearly rooted in its time, as are the costumes and hairstyles of the figures - the artist's children, Harry and Domenica More Gordon. In this way, the work is reminiscent of the portraiture of David Hockney, particularly his famous 'Mr. and Mrs. Clark and Percy' of 1970-1 (Tate).

More About Me

Gordon was a distinguished watercolourist. This painting of his children shows a striking contrast between the heavily patterned carpet and curtains and the broad sweep of the distant landscape.
