About MeThe full length standing figure of Robert Gordon (1668 - 1731), founder of the foundling hospital for boys, is shown dressed in classical robes, revealing bare legs and Roman sandals. He leans on a rectangular plinth (waist height) holding a scroll (as if presenting it to the viewer.) On the front of the plinth a deeply modelled figure of a seated woman (thought to be Charity) holds a baby to her breast and has two children at her feet symbolising Gordon's intention to care for and protect poor boys.

Henry Cheere worked on the statue in his London studio, his painted terracotta sketch model for the design is in the possesion of Robert Gordon's college.

Cheere used his preferred medium of Marble for this monument as opposed to local Granite.
