About MeHermann Gross trained as a gold and silversmith in Stuttgart and Berlin before moving to Paris in 1926 where he met, amongst other artists, Picasso and Matisse. Their influence is clear in this work which combines Gross' early training as a silversmith with his later development as a sculptor.Gross returned to Berlin in 1935 and five years later was conscripted into the Luftwaffe Propaganda Company as a war artist. He spent the post-war years in Paris and later emigrated to the USA. Returning to Germany in 1956 he was approached by Karl Konig, the founder of the Camphill movement, who invited Gross to Aberdeen in 1963 to become the community's artist in residence. Hermann Gross died in Aberdeen on 1 September 1988.
