About MeThis Porcelain bowl is hand painted with birds, flowers and an abstract border. Printed on a piece of paper attached to the base is the following note, written by EA Phillips, the grand-nephew of Hogarth's mother-in-law and former owner of the memorabilia:

"This cup and saucer belonged to the late Mr Hogarth, and has been in my possession ever since the death of my cousin, Mrs Lewis, with whom I passed all my earliest days in Chiswick House. It has established a painting of the late Mr Hogarth to be an original - a group of his servants tossing the tea cut at tea table - and the features of one (my brother) recognised, who remained with my cousin for some years, at an advanced age. The painting is now in the possession of Mr Haggett, late of the bullion office in the Bank of England. He came to ask my brother's opinion of it, if it was an Hogarth, and this relic established it both in pattern and colours . Mr Haggett was desirous to possess it last summer. I told him then it was my wish it should never go out of the family. Therefore, I beg leave, with my humble respects, to present it to Mrs.Hogarth. I am, honoured madam, your most obedient servant, E.A.Phillips"
More About Me
The donor was a granddaughter of a William Hogarth, granite merchant of Aberdeen, who restored his namesake’s tomb in 1856 and was possibly prompted to acquire these artefacts by pride in his possession of the famous painter's name.
