About MeScottish painter James Cowie taught at several Scottish art institutions where he instructed students such as Robert Colquhoun, Robert MacBryde and Joan Eardley. His oil paintings were executed in a strong, linear style and required extensive preliminary studies, taking several years to complete.

In contrast, this watercolour, which is an early work, has a delicacy and spontaneity dictated by the watercolour medium. It depicts two girls in the art room at Bellshill Academy where Cowie was art master.

More About Me

Born into a family of farmers, Cowie created this work whilst he was an art teacher. He went on to influence a number of notable artists including Joan Eardley.
