About MeCorrespondence from Mary W. Gillan to Ann Gillespie, Early Paper Ephemera. Gillan and Gillespie are cousins. Envelope contains one letter and one postcard; the letter is dated 23 June 1902, the postcard is dated 25th June 1902. The correspondence are from Portsoy, Aberdeenshire. Selected verses, handwritten in pencil, is on one side of the postcard - the selected verses are from the Prologue to Alfred Tennyson's 'In Memoriam' (1833). There is also a separate verse on the envelope, in pencil, of the same poem.

James McBey refers to the Gillan family as "distant relatives" living in Portsoy in his autobiography, and stays with them in July 1903.

This object is part of an archive that belonged to Marguerite McBey. As a result of her generosity, Aberdeen Art Gallery holds the largest archive of James McBey's work, including prints, drawings, sketchbooks, oil paintings and memorabilia such as this letter.
