About MeJulie Kvarekval worked in Voss in Norway from the early 1960s until the early 1980s and this silver pendant set with a rock crystal is a good example of the Scandinavian tradition of combining a strong modernist design with an unusual semi precious stone in a tonal colour. Her work can be attributed with the distinctive stamped ‘J.K’ as well as the silver hallmark and, whilst not as well known as some of her contemporaries, examples of her work command both interest and respect. Her jewellery pieces are renowned for their architectural qualities. The surface treatment of the pendant resembles the concrete surface of a Modernist building whilst the suspension links are industrial in concept.
Many Nordic artists engaged with the abstract, unfamiliar and challenging shapes and textures used in Brutalist art and sculpture to create jewellery which challenged the status quo idea of it being precious and refined.
