About MeNeil MacPherson studied at Glasgow School of Art (GSA) from 1974-78 and was elected to the Royal Scottish Academy in 2006. He lives and works in Caithness and his style of painting is inspired by the remote landscape of his surroundings. His subject-matter is also informed by the history and folklore of the area. His work falls into the figurative and narrative style of painting which developed at GSA in the 1970s and '80s. His paintings are populated by surreal figures and animals, their titles suggesting a backstory which the viewer is left to imagine.
