About MeThe Dutch Realist artist David Artz concentrated on painting intimate interiors, often with women and children, usually wearing traditional Dutch costume. When he went to study in Paris he took a trunk of Dutch clothes with him and continued to paint his models wearing these costumes.

In 1867, the year before this painting was completed, the Aberdeen collector John Forbes White visited Paris twice and on both occassions called on David Artz. White bought one of his paintings and persuaded his friends James Walker (the first owner of this painting) and Alexander Macdonald (the wealthy granite merchant and art collector) to do likewise. Artz visited Scotland in 1869, thus further cementing his already strong friendships with Scottish artists and collectors.
