About MeWilliam Gillies grew up in the small East Lothian market town of Haddington and entered Edinburgh College of Art in 1916. He later returned to the college for four decades as lecturer, then Principal and had a substantial impact on 20th century Scottish art and the 'Edinburgh School'. Gillies worked expressively, relying on his free handling of paint to articulate emotion. In his still-lifes he arranged forms and colour, flattening perspective in order to simplify and harmonise the composition. This work employs a subtle, low-key palette, typical of the wartime period.
More About Me
An unusual perspective to this picture; the flattened view is strangely hypnotic and draws you in - helped by the simple use of just a few colours.
