About MeRoger Fry's Post-Impressionist exhibitions in 1910 and then 1912 had a profound effect on Grant's work, whose painting subsequently underwent a series of fascinating changes which reflect an appraisal of Cezanne, Matisse and Picasso.

Like Matthew Smith, Grant adopts a traditional device of presenting his colourful bouquet of flowers against a dark backdrop, but the homage to tradition ends here for Grant's method of handling paint is truly modern. There is little attention to detail nor careful modelling of tones. Instead his flowers are simple shapes, forming a bold pattern.
